[더프리뷰=서울] 이종찬 기자 = 세계적 명성을 자랑하는 스웨덴의 쿨베리발레단이 이름을 바꾸고 세 사람의 안무가와 함께 새로운 협업을 시작한다고 밝혔다.

쿨베리발레단은 본지에 보내 온 메일을 통해 단체 명칭을 기존의 ‘Cullbergbaletten’에서 ‘Cullberg'로 변경하며 로고와 디자인도 바꾼다고 밝혔다. 기존의 이름은 '쿨베리발레단'이지만 사실상 현대발레와 현대무용에 주력하고 있는 점을 고려하여 ’쿨베리‘로 변경한 것이다.

이와 함께 3명의 안무가를 초청, 새로운 협업을 시작한다. 쿨베리와 함께 작업할 이들 3명은 알마 쇠더베리, 예프타 반 딘테르, 그리고 데보라 헤이. 이들은 향후 3년간 쿨베리 무용단을 위해 두 편의 작품을 제작한다.

알마 쇠더베리는 쿨베리로부터 제안을 받았을 때 이 세계적인 무용단과 함께 작업한다는 게 믿기지 않았다며 이제 자신이 그동안 발전시켜 온 모든 것을 열고 나눌 때가 되었음을 느꼈다고 소감을 밝혔다.

쿨베리의 예술감독 가브리엘 스미츠는 무용단의 예술적 정체성을 보다 선명하고 깊이있게 발전시키기 위해 이들 세 사람을 선택했다고 말했다. 이들 3인은 자신들 고유의 예술형태를 발전시켜왔으며 이는 독창적이고도 모험적이며 또한 여러 가지생각을 불러일으킨다고 말했다.

한편 오는 4월에는 디지털 아카이브를 웹사이트에 올린다. 여기에는 1967년 창단 이래 제작된 모든 작품과 연구, 기록들이 담긴다. 아카이브는 지속적으로 보완, 업데이트된다.

쿨베리 무용단은 LG아트센터와 서울세계무용축제(SIDance, 시댄스)의 초청으로 한국 관객들과 만난 바 있다.

 

Cullbergbaletten begins an artistic collaboration with three associated artists, and changes its name

Last week Cullbergbaletten released several exciting news!

This spring, the company begins a new artistic collaboration connecting three of the contemporary dance scene’s internationally most known, well-established and exciting names for three years. Alma Söderberg, Jefta van Dinther and Deborah Hay will create two works over a period of three years, exclusively for the company. It means a whole new way of working for the company which also changes the name to Cullberg, and updates with a new logotype and graphic design.

“The fourteen-year-old in me cannot believe that I will create for Cullberg. I have not had the ambition to create for a world-famous company, but when I received the invitation, I felt it was time for me to open up and share what I developed over the past ten years. Together with the dancers, I will work with the body as an instrument in the room. My works are rarely representative or narrative, what happens on stage is more like a concert, a musical exploration. The dancers will participate in creating the music they dance to live on stage. Listening is central, both to the silent movement and to the sounding, says Alma Söderberg about her work with Cullberg.

Artistic director Gabriel Smeets:
“In order to sharpen, deepen and develop the company’s artistic identity, we want to work exclusively with three choreographers. What unites them is that they individually have developed practices that form the basis of all their work. Their artistic proposals are original, risky, remarkable and personal. Their works are immersive, accessible and thought-provoking”.

Digital archive
During April, a digital archive will be launched at Cullberg’s website. The archive presents a complete overview of the company’s works since its inception in 1967 and aims to provide information on Cullberg’s artistic history for research, studies and media. The archive will be continuously completed and updated.
