With(in) Dance

by Raul (Buboy) Raquitico Jr., Philippines
2020 CPI Program alumnus (Modern performance)

“Dance is a form of medicine, a way of expression, and a source of passion.”

A few days ago, Team Body Archive, composed of Deborah, Sarah, Carissa, and I, all alumni of the 2020 Cultural Partnership Initiative (CPI) Program, had its first physical meeting with the project beneficiaries of Body Archive (Collaborative Learning and Youth for the Environment through Online Movement and Digital Arts Education Program). Twenty-three young dance artists from the folk dance group had a taste of Therapeutic Creative Movement, one of the two modules which they will co-develop under the program.

As one of the successful recipients of the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE) grant alongside participants from Laos and Vietnam, I remember the surreal feeling of receiving the news that Body Archive, after countless drafts, lengthy chat exchanges, and online team meetings, could potentially implement our proposed plan. What started as a seed of random ideas inspired by our realities as artists coping with the pandemic and with devastating natural disasters, the project continues to be a reminder of our humble beginnings as participants. Our thanks go to the generosity and assistance of KOFICE, Seoul Section of International Dance Council CID-UNESCO, and Myra Beltran’s Dance Forum for making this learning experience possible.

Last year was a testament of how artists, performing artists in particular, struggled yet succeeded in adapting to the circumstances as opportunities to perform and earn a decent living were compromised. Since the advent of the pandemic in the Philippines, my colleagues in contemporary dance have sought various creative and social initiatives to pursue their art - as online facilitators, hosts, event organizers, among others. Some groups introduced new programs which integrated technology with dance and movement. Daloy Dance Company’s Daloy Movement, an embodied movement practice and community dance gathering held online, is one such initiative. Others include LikhaPH’s wide array of online dance/movement for well-being classes, and the CCP Choreographers’ Series and Contemporary Dance Network’s annual competition for emerging contemporary dance choreographers, Wifi[Virtual]Body.ph, which explored movement on film. Ironically, the closure of studios and theaters paved the way for individuals, small groups, and organizations to create new linkages, of which the 2020 CPI Program actually came by as a surprise.

Looking back, I recall the excitement I had during my first week as a participant. For eight weeks (which went by so quickly!), I devoured a variety of webinars, recorded lectures, and performance videos. Online learning may not have been an ideal setting to gain new knowledge and facilitate exchange but it teaches people to be empathetic and (extra) patient. Dealing with intermittent freezes and lags, bridging linguistic differences, and keeping one’s attention when distraction at home is inevitable all contributed to the experience of communal online learning.

Despite all the limitations and risks that the pandemic posed, I was indeed mesmerized by how art and contemporary dance communities in South Korea continue to push beyond its boundaries to connect with its communities. At the same time I was inspired to look inward and ponder how much I know about my roots in Philippine contemporary dance upon learning about the evolution of Korean dance. I had a glimpse of how present Korean choreographers are influenced by their strong foundation and understanding of their culture which were evident in their thematic and artistic choices. As I wrote my essays, I observed that the common denominator among featured choreographers such as Bora Kim, Kyungmin Ji, and MUT Dance Company was an emphasis on simplicity and honesty as starting points of a choreographic work. This focus on the core of ideas parallels how prominent figures in Korean dance history strived to develop a movement language that is distinctly Korean by going back to the roots of Korean culture while incorporating elements from other cultures as well.

With admiration and inspiration from these new ideas and insights, I’ve looked inward as a Filipino contemporary dance artist living in the “untact” era. How does art, particularly dance, assert its value during these challenging times when the idea of performance-making has been largely and usually carried out in physical and tactile spaces? How can the practice of contemporary dance be made sustainable?

There are no straight answers to these questions. But perhaps what significantly aided me in addressing these questions was the process of creating an Action Plan from scratch. Being in the process was a bit nostalgic as it made me revisit my Community Development practice back in the university before I ventured into contemporary dance. I never thought that these two seemingly disjoint worlds of community development and contemporary dance could merge. Through this process, I’ve looked inward and realized how much potential we have as contemporary dance artists, not only as performance makers and stewards of our art but also as pro-active channels to bring art and dance closer to communities in a language that they will understand, in the same way they understand the value of food, music, games, and stories.

The trajectory of Philippine contemporary dance perhaps rests in uncertain ground for now but I’m keeping my optimism that it will definitely permeate into pockets of our everyday lives. As it continues to find promise in meaningful collaborations and intersections, I have trust in my colleagues and peers in the community that Philippine contemporary dance will be as courageous as before, if not more courageous, in challenging the idea of existing platforms in order to be seen, heard, felt, and represented.

There may be nil or less of physical performances and audiences but art and dance will never lose its value. They are too deeply ingrained in the human spirit to be so easily dismissed. Perhaps the future of contemporary dance does not only lie within the purest intentions of its practicing artists, but also in the communities whose realities they represent and serve. Whether dance heals, encourages freedom of expression, or brings out vitality, the artist in me believes in the unique art each one of us holds dearly.
