[더프리뷰=런던] 조용민 무용예술가 = 이번 공연이 끝나고 좋은 반응이 많아서 감사하고 행복했다. 그중 런던의 공연예술 평론가 알렉스 시어즈(Aleks Sierz)의 평문을, 그의 동의를 얻어 번역해 보낸다.
현재 런던은 5월 17일 이후로 극장과 박물관 등이 재개장을 하고 있는 중이다. 지난 몇 개월 동안 모두가 힘든 상황에서도 여러 형태로 공연들을 선보인 모든 장소와 사람들을 축하하기에 좋은 시기인 것 같다. 다양한 영감들을 선사한 모두에게 먼저 힘찬 박수와 함께 "훌륭합니다" 하고 찬사를 보낸다. 예를 들어 어제 웨스트 런던 노팅힐(Notting Hill)에 있는 포르토벨로 로드(Portobello Road)를 따라 여러 빈 상점 안에서 펼쳐진 코로넷 시어터(Coronet Theatre) 주최 야외축제인 아웃사이드 인 페스티벌(Outside In Festival, 5월 7-15일)의 공연들, 그중에서도 특히 230번지의 빈 상점에서 9일간 매일 색다른 공연을 선보인 무용예술가 조용민의 설치작업과 함께하는 무용 퍼포먼스는 매우 흥미로웠고 푹 빠져들게 했다.
창문을 통해 거리에서 관람하는 관객들은 갑작스런 소나기에도 아랑곳하지 않고 그가 발산해내는 기발하고 신선함에 매료되어갔다. 가끔은 유머러스하면서 초현실적인 이미지를 담은 춤동작들과, 옷걸이와 전화기 등의 소품들과 함께 만들어가는 연극적인 장면들, 공연중 무대에서 직접 의상을 갈아입는가 하면, 밝은 색상의 소재의 의상과 함께 만들어내는 발레 형태의 이미지들은 그가 들려주는 한국가요 <사랑밖엔 난 몰라>의 폭발적인 열창과 더불어 열정적인 분위기의 공연을 계속해서 발산시켰다.
또한 이 짧은 공연이 주는 즐거움은 공연을 감상하는 것 뿐만이 아니라 거리의 풍경을 함께 즐길 수 있다는 것이었다. 40 명에 가까운 관객들, 여기에는 대부분이 이 공연에 관심 있는 사람들과, 호기심에 즐기고자 하는 사람들, 또한 지나가다가 공연에 이끌린 사람들, 심지어 술에 취한 사람까지 모두가 이런 흥미진진한 기회를 놓칠 수는 없었을 것이다. 특히 코로나 바이러스로 인해 모두가 고통을 겪고 있는 상황에서 코로넷 극장의 예술감독인 안다 윈터스(Anda Winters)가 연극과 무용공연을 통하여 지역 상권을 재활성시키고 또한 다양한 형태의 예술들(연극, 무용을 포함한, 음악, 인형극, 설치예술 등)을 함께 선보인 이번 행사는 깊이 기억에 간직될 의미있는 축제이다.

Yong Min Cho in Outside In
With many theatres now reopening again, it is surely a good moment to celebrate all those venues which managed to stage live shows in the past few months — often in very stressful circumstances. A big shout out to you all! Brilliant! The sheer variety of shows has been inspiring. For example, yesterday I went to see the final day of Outside In, the Coronet Theatre’s diverse and site specific programme of free live events staged in several shop windows along the Portobello Road in Notting Hill, West London. In particular, I really enjoyed body-artist Yong Min Cho’s installation and movement piece, which he performed every day for a week in the Corner Shop at number 230. With the audience outside in the street, braving a sudden rain shower, he delivered a wonderfully quirky, occasionally humorously surreal, dance piece, using a hatstand and phone as props, and making onstage costume changes, turning the vivid colours of material into balletic shapes, defining and impassioning the space with textiles, then bursting into Korean song. This example of porto teatro included a love poem: lovely. The short performance was fun not only to watch, but also to experience the street scene: 40 people, many with a sense of curiosity, some with a sense of adventure, plus passersby attracted to the event, and even a random drunk, all part of an exciting impromptu occasion, which took place while all around the Portobello market was in full swing. With all our high-streets suffering, especially during the pandemic, it’s great that Anda Winters, artistic director of the Coronet, is using theatre and dance to help regenerate the local shops and to celebrate the arts in their multitudinous forms, including theatre, dance, music, puppetry, art and video installations. A really memorable occasion.
