(When It Flowers, We'll See)>는 시인 류시화가 번역한 힌디어 격언을 차용한 것.

"When It Flowers, We Will See"
Paintings, Part of the Series 'Focus Korea #1'

Ha Haengeun solo exhibition

VERNISSAGE February 24, 5pm
FORUM KUNST contemporary @ART SPACE stift millstatt

Andrea K. Schlehwein(Millstatt, Austria)

Ha Haengeun's first solo exhibition in Europe will be hosted by gallerist Eleonore Schäfer at FORUM KUNST contemporary in Carinthia, Austria.

The artist's paintings(acrylic on canvas) meet the aesthetic pulse of a young generation of artists who, across continents, both in Asia and Europe, are looking for a new visual language that does not only imply an examination of form but also an underlying, quite spiritual level of meaning.

The series of recent works from 2018-19 exhibited at FORUM KUNST contemporary under the artist's own title When It Flowers, We will See consistently places the human face, the human figure in the centre of the image. In a seemingly overwrought, almost alienated way, she presents herself in a rigid pose. The statuesque quality deliberately recalls paintings of the Renaissance. "Sometimes I borrow motives, even from times long past, but I choose only what is important to me", the artist says.

The motionless expression gives the viewer time to focus on the environment, the accessories, the backgrounds, the narrative situation. It allows the viewer to open up to the hidden world emerging from the tranquility. “I'm interested in the invisible world and the course of life whose motives are often hidden from us. In my painting, I set out to explore the invisible world of spirit and spirituality. In that sense, I do not consider my paintings as figurative, but rather abstract."

On closer inspection the facial features become more differentiated (the artist speaks of self-portraits) and reveal the proximity between the newborn and the elderly. The colourful imagery should not misguide us to a superficial interpretation. The human being and its reality as well as the passage of time as an essential constant in human life are consistent themes in this young artist's complex series. The only tangible reality is the awareness of approaching death. The poetic title of this first solo exhibition by Ha Haengeun is to be understood in this very sense: When It Flowers, We Will See is a credo for life as well as a synonym for patience. Without patience, the flower will not venture out of the hidden realm of darkness towards the surface, into visibility and light.

The title When It Flowers, We Will See implies hope and humour, sincerity, a search for meaning, the aspiration to equate art with life and to make both be seen as an expression of truthfulness.

"Life unfolds its very own and incomprehensible power to those who can face the truth. My truth is my death. And this is not an abstract concept but a very real one."

This quote by Ha Haegeun, however, is immediately followed by a wink:

My art is humorous, I keep trying even though I know that 'it' is impossible.

Ha Haengeun, born in 1985, lives and works in Seoul, South Korea. She graduated from the prestigious Hong-Ik University in Seoul that has, over the past decades, brought forth a considerable number of visual artists with a strong influence on the Korean art scene.

For many years Eleonore Schäfer has visited Asia, especially South Korea, where she has kept an eye on the vibrant art market and aspiring artists. This year, after intense preparation, she succeeded for the first time in bringing Korean contemporary visual art approaches to Austria, subsumed under her new gallery format: Focus Korea. Focus Korea will present two exhibitions in 2019, Focus Korea #1 Ha Haengeun (February 24 - April 10), immediately followed by Focus Korea #2 Woo Jong-Taek (March 29 - May 11) at FORUM KUNST contemporary.

Although the aesthetic approaches of these artists could not be further apart, the two exhibitions are connected by their powerful visual language and inner dynamics.

Eleonore Schäfer and her curator Andrea K. Schlehwein are looking forward to the local audience's reactions to these two exciting representatives of contemporary art from South Korea.
