The Dallas Morning News

Dance Council North Texas

Simona Dabija.

Prague Quadrennial, The Women in Dance Leadership Conference

YeaJean Choi and Martheya Nygaard, co-creators of kNOwBOX dance, said, “As the topic of fairness and equality in society and politics at home and abroad is currently a hot topic, we believe that equality in dance must be dealt with in the digital space of this age. Although the digital space has problems with media misinformation, we think it is a space where positive public power exists through various platforms such as a space for collaboration, sharing and networking of artistic creations. Through various programs including NBFF, we would like to meet the audience online and offline and share various thoughts on these topics. We believe that experiencing the art of dance through the meeting of dance and film creates an opportunity to understand works of art from a different perspective.”

YeaJean Choi is making dance works and dance films with the concept of reorganizing the body and space through the site-specific creative methodology. She received her M.F.A from Texas Women's University, USA, and her choreography and dance films have been performed and screened in Prague, Mexico, Canada, USA, Taiwan and South Korea. As an educator she is currently the coordinator of Dance and full-time professor at Universidad de las Américas Puebla University in Mexico where she teaches Korean Dance, Choreography, Contact Improvisation, and Dance Teaching Methodology.

Martheya Nygaard is a dance artist with her BFA and MFA in Dance interested in cultivating “distortion” as an aesthetic philosophy, challenging and expanding notions of contemporary dance, by creating dance resources and content for both on and offline. She co-creates with mixtamtous, a human-digital interface art exploration that utilizes human and machine interaction. She has taught and presented work nationally and internationally in Canada, Mexico, Prague, and across the USA. Her Texas commissions include; Arts Mission Oak Cliff, Big Rig Dance Collective, Dallas Office of Arts and Culture, Danielle Georgiou Dance Group, The Elevator Project, Muscle Memory Dance Theater, Jordan Fuchs Company, and Over the Bridge Arts, among others. She has published articles in the Journal of Dance Education and Dance Education In Practice.

In 2018, co-creators Martheya Nygaard and YeaJean Choi sought to answer the question "How can artists have access to stay connected, make new work, and share work globally?" and kNOwBOX dance (NB) was born as a digital dance company. NB facilitated Evolving Labs, hosted a Dance Film Workshop at the Dallas Public Library, partnered with the Dance Council of North Texas to produce the Dallas Dance Film Festival, and co-organized an international ensemble performance at the Prague Quadrennial.
