[더프리뷰=서울] 김수나 기자 = 독일 안무가 안드레아 K. 슐레바인이 무용플랫폼 NETZWERK AKS와 함께 무용영화 <너무 많은 영웅들(too many heroes)>을 발표했다. 이 작품은 사실과 허구를 구분하는 것의 불가능함을 주제로 카메라 열대, 드론 한 대, 무용수 여섯 명, 퍼포머 네 명, 카메라우먼 두 명, 카메라맨 세 명, 보조출연자 한 명, 어시스턴트 한 명, 안무가 한 명으로 구성된 프로덕션 팀으로 제작되었다. 영화는 오스트리아 연방 예술문화체육부의 지원사업인 ‘예술, 다시 시작하다(Neustart Kultur)’중 첫 번째인 #1 무대에서 영상까지(#1 Von der Bühne zum Video)의 특별지원 사업으로 선정되었다.
이 작품은 기록으로 남겨진 이미지가 가진 힘과 점점 더 희미해지는 사실과 허구의 경계를 주제로 다룬다. 가령 행동의 인과관계를 분명히 하는 것이나 분노와 반란, 그리고 그 감정을 촉발하는 동기 사이의 관계에 대한 문제와 같은 것을 말한다.
작품에는 우리가 매일 미디어를 통해 보는 모습들이 등장한다. 어디로 발산해야 할지 모르는 분노를 가진 시민들, 현실과 비현실의 위협으로부터 도망치고 위기와 혼란, 소란 속에서 지쳐가는, 휘둘리고 불안해하는 사람들의 모습이다.
작품의 콘셉트는 2021년 2월 1일 군사정권이 권력을 잡은 이후 계속해서 자행되는 군부의 인권침해가 안타까운 현실이 되어버린 미얀마의 어려운 상황에 주목할 필요성에서 출발했다.
여기서 미얀마는 상징적으로 등장하는 국가이며, 벨라루스, 중국, 시리아, 말리 등으로 바꾸어도 무방하다. 세상에는 독재와 인권침해로 고통받으며 민주주의를 향한 이들의 용감한 노력이 고문과 삶의 상실이라는 대가로 돌아오는 러시아, 아프가니스탄 같은 국가도 있다.
‘너무 많은 영웅들’의 목표는 결코 현실의 특정 상황을 묘사하려는 것이 아니다. 그보다는 아스팔트 위의 연약함, 혹은 사람과 도시의 야외 공간 사이의 관계를 탐구한다. 작품 속에서는 갈등이 고조되다가 갑작스럽게 이완되는 순간이 번갈아가며 찾아온다. 역동적이며 쉽게 파악할 수 없는 상호작용 과정을 바라보는 각각의 관점이 하나의 큰 전체인 영화 속 미지의 세계에서 어떻게 사라지는지를 볼 수 있다.

Schlehwein + NETZWERK AKS, which has received one the coveted special grants from the Austrian BMKOES as part of the series Neustart Kultur # 1 Von der Bühne zum Video this year.
The production deals with the power of documentary images, the increasingly difficult distinction between fake and fact, and questions about the correlation of actions and their triggers, the appropriateness of anger, revolt and their often no longer comprehensible motives.
Images that we see in the media every day. Angry citizens who don't know what to do with their energy, stressed, unsettled people who flee from real and unreal threats, exhausting themselves in crisis, chaos and turmoil.
The concept was triggered by a need to draw attention to the ongoing injustice in Myanmar, where the constant violation of human rights by the junta has become a sad reality since the military seized power on Feb. 1, 2021.
Myanmar stands as a synonym, we could also speak of Belarus, China, Syria, Mali; Russia or Afghanistan (the list goes on and on), where people suffer from real dictatorships and human rights violations and often pay with torture or their own lives for their courageous commitment to democracy.
too many heroes never aims to depict a specific reality.
It's an examination of the relationship between the body and the external urban space, of vulnerability on asphalt. Escalating conflicts alternate with sudden moments of empathy. It shows how the individual perspective of elusive, dynamic processes of interaction loses itself in the cinematic no man's land of a larger whole.
